Tyranny of the minority

By Daniel Boyarin

Without wanting to seem too cynical, I think that this election, in itself alarming to me, will not make much difference at all vis-a-vis health care reform, which was nearly dead anyway. I am of the opinion that it is better to have no bill at all than one that only gives prizes to the insurance capitalists and to the Catholic right. The real disaster of the American system of governance is the filibuster which has turned majority rule into supermajority rule, thus hampering the will of the majority to make changes in the face of virtually any determined opposition no matter how small in numbers.
