Charles Altieri, professor of English

Professor of English Charles Altieri teaches graduate courses in 19th-century thought, Victorian literature, modern and contemporary English and American poetry, modern and classical literary theory, literature and the visual arts, and seminars on specific poets, theoretical problems, and interdisciplinary period studies.

He teaches undergraduate classes on "great books," modern and contemporary literature, poetry and the visual arts, Shakespeare, 19th- and 20th-century intellectual backgrounds to literature, all periods of Anglo-American poetry from the Romantics to the present, and topics such as autobiography, the epic, the lyric and love poetry.

Altieri served on the Executive Council of the Modern Language Association from 2005 to 2008. He is a fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.
