Paul Gertler is Li Ka Shing Professor of Economics in the Haas School of Business and professor of health services finance in the School of Public Health. He is a research associate of the National Bureau of Economic Research, an affiliate of Center for Effective Global Action (CEGA) and Jameel Poverty Action Lab (J-PAL), and is former chief economist for the World Bank's Human Development Network (2004-06). Gertler is considered an early pioneer in the randomized evaluation of social programs in developing countries. His work has focused on early childhood development, education, fertility and contraceptive use, health systems, energy efficiency, housing, water and sanitation and poverty alleviation. He holds a Ph. D. in economics from the University of Wisconsin.
