Stephanie Jones-Rogers is an assistant professor of history at UC Berkeley. Her general research interests include 19th century African-American history, the history of American slavery, and U.S. women's and gender history. She is currently completing a regional study which draws upon formerly enslaved people’s testimony, slave traders’ papers, legal documents, financial records, travel writing, illustrations, newspapers, city and business directories, military documents, and other narrative sources to dramatically reshape our understanding of white women’s economic relationships to slavery, how their investments in the institution shaped their gender identities, and how these women’s economic choices impacted the lives of the enslaved people they owned.
